Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
Philippians 2:3-4
I really like this verse. I think, as humans, it is so hard not to compare ourselves to others. We see someone with a nice clothing or nice things, and we want to compare it to ourselves. Constantly comparing yourself to others or comparing others to yourself is not going to bring happiness. I think sometimes people need to realize that it is not all about your own interests or your own goals. It is very important to have goals for yourself, but don't let it allow you to compare yourself to others or to think you are above anyone else. We are all here together to help each other and support one another. I think sometimes we forget we were put on Earth to serve others, not to serve ourselves.
I agree that people naturally compare themselves to others, and it takes strength to center yourself and avoid that pitfall. I think that particularly in teaching, people tend to have a sense of competition with each other. I've seen teachers who are seemingly in competition to see who is the most effective, original, well-liked, fun, or hard-working. We are all striving to teach students and engage them, and it shouldn't be a competition. It should be about the students. Sometimes people don't want to share tips or help each other, because they want to keep their recipe for success a secret; however, when we open our hearts to each other and put others above ourselves, we truly serve each other and God.
Working in the school setting, well in any job I guess, we can get competitive with others. We may find the need to be acknowledged above others, after all I think, this concept has been ingrained in us in school, from media, etc. What the verse, is asking us to do, is that when we do something, may it be for the well being of others and not just for our own glory. This reminds me of my mentor I had when I started working. He was outspoken and sometimes he was not everyone's favorite colleague, but his final argument was, "I am proposing this for the good of the students". For me his suggestions made sense and it was obvious for the students. Not sure why those who opposed him, disagreed with him. When I make decisions now for my classrooms, I always think, what is best for my students.

I think that this verse embodies what America and our culture really struggle with. There are so many aspects of our culture where we show how vain we are. With selfies and Facebook pages, I see a lot of evidence of vain behavior. Of course, there is two sides to every coin and there are some really great people who make it their life's work to serve and help others. But I don't think that is the norm.
I think that this verse is a great reminder that we are to work, no matter what it is, to the glory of God and not for the promotion of our own name or position. We should be of service to others first and foremost. It reminds me of the saying, "what do you do when no one is looking?". We should not be trying to "toot our own horn" but let the work and service that we do be to help our neighbors in need. If something more comes from that, than it is a secondary benefit, but should never be our motivating factor or the sole reason for our help, work, or service.
It is important for us to remember the why we teach and who we teach. We should always be looking out for the best interest of the students and their families, not what is most convenient for us or saves us time. Erin Miller

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
To me this verse means to do things out of the goodness of your heart because you know it is the right and Godly thing to do. Not because you expect something in return. You should want to help others because it is what God would want and what is morally correct. And then when you do help someone, it's not really appropriate to brag about your good deed. Do it and move on and know in your heart it's what should have been done.
I think this verse is reminding us that we need to do things out of the goodness of our heart. We should not do things for glory, recognition or because it will make us look good, but rather because we want to help others. We should not do things to out-do others or make ourselves look better. Rather, we should help others and push for others to succeed.
To me, this verse speaks a lot! I have never been a selfish person, however I have come in contact with a lot of selfish people. One's who only do something nice for you because they want something in return. This has taught me, to always be selfless and do it for the right reasons. As a daughter, sister, friend, and co-worker I try to do things for others because I love and care for the people in my life. This also plays a part in being an educator. We are educators to help students learn, achieve, and grow. In most cases, we are not doing it for ourselves.

This verse reminds me of the old saying "keeping up with the Jones". We should never do things that will only and always benefit ourselves. Our actions are a representation of the tyoe of person that we are and f you only do things for yourself then that shows you are a selfish person. When we do things for others we are acting in the image of Jesus and reaching our full potential as a loving and caring christian.
This verse reminds me to put others before myself. My actions should not be in response to what others think of me but rather how I treat others for the right reasons to help others.
After reading this verse, it brings up thoughts about being a teacher. In our profession, it goes without saying that we are working to improve the lives of our students. We don't do it to receive praise or to get recognition on the job, but our interests lie in helping others to improve their quality of life. This is not only true for special education, but is also true for how we should approach all situations in our lives.
When I read this verse, I began to think of a good work ethic. This summer, I have been working with the IT department at my school. Some of the people I work with complain a lot and they feel that since they don't get paid well they shouldn't have to work hard. I work hard and I want to do a good job for the kids and for the school. I take pride in my work and I care about the kids I work with. I don't care if someone who does less than me gets paid more, I care that the kids have computers that work and my school looks nice.
One of my life's mantra is that everyone knows something you don't, so you should learn from everyone. I love meeting new people with an entirely different insight than my own, which is one of the main reasons I became a teacher. I think it's extremely important to keep and open mind and know that as humans, we should constantly be evolving. Being humble and putting others before yourself is the best way one can contribute something to society and the world. Constantly thinking of yourself, and only doing things to better your life really prevents you from developing strong moral values, or being remembered and admired when your gone.
I know that each of us has worked very hard in this profession that we have chosen and it is not for the accolades or financial reward. Each and every one of us makes a difference and in doing so I hope we all can know that little things make this crazy world just a bit better. We are doing it for others and for the right reasons.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4
I think this verse is especially important to consider when working with others in a collaborative partnership. We should act as a team and not try to outshine the other person with selfish ambition. As co-teachers, it would be our jobs to put the students before ourselves, and we should act in a way that reflects that. Seeking to make your own self look good will cause you to lost sight of your purpose and eventually fall.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4
This verse reminds me of what it takes to have a good co-teaching relationship. It is so important to keep in mind others perspectives in this relationship and not to be selfish in your own thoughts and preferences. I think this is great advice to keep in mind when trying to establish a successful relationship.

As many others have stated, we do this profession out of service with the ultimate reward bringing education and value to others. It is about empowering young minds to become productive citizens within our society. Being apart of that movement alone should be rewarding enough.
To me, this scripture speaks of remaining humble an holding fast to the reality that we are all here as soldiers in the work for the common good. None of us is more mighty, important or powerful than any other. No matter what position one holds or what level of education they acquire, all of us should remain willing to work "in the trenches" and "get our hands dirty". For that is where the true rewards come from.
I agree with Erin. Looking out for others, as well as putting others before ourselves is sometimes important. Especially in the education field. Our students may need us more than we know on some days.

This is something I really struggle with. Not doing things out of ambition or conceit, but truly valuing others interests over mine. I think it's important to consider your aides ideas, or other teachers you collaborate with, before just taking a my way or the highway approach.
It's important to slow down and consider the perspectives and opinions of others. It's hard for me because I'm a deep thinker and like to do things in creative ways. But I also don't speak up sometimes. I think in this instance it's good to remember that I need to go with others ideas sometimes and not be disappointed when my thought process or plan isn't the chosen plan.
